Sprinkler Controller Trouble Shooting

Having Installed Several Thousand Sprinkler Systems over the past several years, here are the most common mistakes made by homeowners who are not comfortable with their Sprinkler Controller.

Most Sprinkler Controllers have a knob or a digital touch screen.  Either way, the basic functions are the same.

1.  Sometimes some brands of Sprinkler Controllers won’t work because the ” Time and Date,” have not been set correctly.  If you select time/date and the screen is blank with no time or date then you have a problem.

*******************************************************************************************************************************

2.  The most common reason that a Sprinkler Controller won’t work is because the breaker has been tripped for the electrical plug that the controller is plugged into.  People assume that because the LED screen on the controller has power that the controller is receiving power.  THIS IS NOT THE CASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  ALL CONTROLLERS HAVE BACKUP BATTERIES IN THEM TO MAINTAIN THE CONTROLLERS PROGRAMMING IF YOUR ELECTRICITY GOES OFF.  THE BREAKER CAN BE TRIPPED TO THE ELECTRICAL OUTLET AND THE DIGITAL DISPLAY WILL STILL RUN OFF THE BATTERY MAKING IT LOOK LIKE IT HAS POWER WHEN IT DOES NOT.

TEST YOUR OUTLET BY CHECKING YOUR BREAKERS OR PLUGGING SOMETHING INTO THE SOCKET SUCH AS A LIGHT OR A POWER TOOL.

********************************************************************************************************************************

Another very common mistake is that people confuse “Start Times,” with “Run Times” on the controller.

A Run Time is how long you program each Sprinkler Zone to run.

(Zone 1  5 minutes, Zone 2 8 minutes, Zone 3 25 minutes and so on.)  You program how long you want each Sprinkler Zone to run.

A Start Time is a time that you set on the controller to start zone one running.  All other zones automatically follow zone one in order lowest to highest.  Zone 2 knows to always follow zone 1 when it is done.  Zone 3 knows to follow Zone 2 and so on.  Let me repeat this.  Start Times are only for zone 1.  Again, a “Start Time,” is a time that you would like your Sprinkler System to come and run through all the zones.

Sprinkler Controllers have the ability to run more than one start time.  This is to allow your entire Sprinkler System to run more than once in a 24 hour period.  You can have a Start Time of 1 PM.  Zone 1 comes on and runs until its programmed time elapses.  Zone 2 automatically comes on next and runs.  Then zone 3 and so on.  You might have a 2nd Start Time several hours later to start and run your entire system again.  (2nd start time at 8 PM)  The Sprinkler System has had plenty of time to run through all the zones when it started at 1 PM.  At 8 PM the controller turns zone 1 on again and all the zones run their programmed amount of time.  THE MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE IS THINKING THAT YOU MUST PROGRAM A START TIME FOR EACH ZONE. ( YOU CAN NOT PROGRAM A START TIME FOR ZONE 2,3,4 etc.)  This is also apparent by the fact that most Sprinkler Controllers have a limit of 4 start times but can run more zones than 4.  Most Sprinkler Controllers can run 10 zones or more.

What causes a big problem is a when person programs a Start Time at 1Pm.  Thinking incorrectly that they need to program a Start Time for zone 2.  They enter a second Start Time for 1:15pm, and a third start time for zone 3 at 1:30 PM.  So here is what happens.  Say each zone is programmed to run for 10 minutes each.(Run Time)  Zone 1 comes on and runs at 1 PM.  At 1:10 PM Zone 1 stops and zone 2 comes on.  At 1:15 PM the second start time kicks in and tries to turn on zone 1 again while zone 2 has only been running for five minutes and the other subsequent zones have not run at all.  This is called an “Overlapping Start Time.”  With an Overlapping Start Time, Different brands of controllers do different things.  They are all bad regardless.  Some will run zone one over and over and over causing a flood.  Others will not run at all.

Most people only use or need one Start Time.

********************************************************************************************************************************

The “Water Budget Feature,” found on most controllers can cause problems with your Sprinkler Run Times.  Water Budget is a quick way to quickly change all your Run Times for all your zones at once.  Example  —  Out of the box, your new Sprinkler Controller will be set to 100%.  If you program zone 1 to run 10 minutes and zone 2 to run 15 minutes then if your water budget is 100% then that is exactly what they will run.  If you change your water budget from 100% to 200% now zone 1 will run 20 minutes and zone 2 will run 30 minutes and any other zone’s run time will run double of what it was programmed at 100%.  This is a great feature until you accidentally change your water budget to 900% and don’t realize it.  (or 5%)

IF YOUR RUN TIMES ARE RUNNING MORE OR LESS THAN WHAT YOU PROGRAMMED THEM FOR THEN CHECK THE WATER BUDGET.

********************************************************************************************************************************

Some of the older digital Sprinkler Controllers have an “Enter” button.  Any programming you do must be followed by hitting the Enter Button.  If you don’t hit it then programming that you think you keyed in is lost.  This is why the newer controllers don’t have an Enter Button.

Today was a good day!  The folks with CMG installed a Channel Drain in Norman Channel Drains are a big part of our business.  It takes a lot of attention to detail.  Channel Drain installation takes several specific steps.  It is a slow process that takes confidence and experience.  I was able to train a couple of our guys on the complete process.  They learned a lot but are nowhere near ready to solo yet.

Here is a picture of the channel drain.  The customer had standing water in the middle of their sidewalk up against their front step.  It built up every time it rained or the sprinkler systemran.

Cutting the concrete must be precise.  Installing the concrete is the last step.

Channel Drain Installed by CMG

Hopefully 2012 wont be as hot as 2011.  Record heat for Central Oklahoma caused the death of trees, shrubs, and grass all over the state.  A new Lawn Irrigation Systeminstalled by CMG  can help solve these problems.  Sprinkler Systems water much faster and more efficiently than dragging hoses around all day to water your yard.

Our Sprinkler Systems areSelf-Draing.   The Sprinkler Pipes Drain underground when the Irrigation System is turned off.   Nothing needs to be done to prepare your Irrigation System for winter except turn it off.  There is no water left in the Sprinkler Pipes to Freeze.

Just like a home or a car, a Sprinkler System requires repair or adjustment from time to time.  We at CMG, take great pride in the Sprinkler Repair Services that we provide.  In almost 18 years of service, CMG has solved virtually every Sprinkler Repair Problempossible.  We solve Sprinkler Repair Problemsthat other companies can’t handle.  If you live in Oklahoma City and have Broken Sprinkler Heads, or if you live in Norman and have Leaking Sprinkler Valves, or if you live in Edmond and your Sprinkler Controller quit working, give us a call or send us an e-mail. 405 – 226-0629 cmgsprinklers@hotmail.com

Lawn Sprinkler Repair is one of our business focuses.   We can help with:

1. Sprinkler Controller Problems

2. Leaking Back-Flow Valves

3. Leaking Sprinkler Pipes

4.  Shorted or disconnected valve wires

5. Sprinkler Zones or Sprinkler Stations that won’t work

6. Broken Sprinkler Heads

The above are the most common problems that we deal with.

CMG Sprinklers and Drains can help if you need to re-design your sprinkler system. If for example you are adding a swimming pool in your back yard, we can move the sprinkler heads and sprinkler pipes to fit the new dimensions of your yard. We can redesign or add-on to sprinkler systemswhere the home owners needs change.

Like our name says, CMG Sprinklers and Drainsalso installs New Lawn Sprinkler Systems and Drainage Systems for folks who live in Central Oklahoma. If you live in Mustang and would like a French Drain installed or if you live in Norman and need a broken sprinkler head replaced, or if you live in Oklahoma Cityand desire a new Lawn Sprinkler System, Give CMG Sprinklers and Drainsa call or send us an e-mail. 405-226-0629  cmgsprinklers@hotmail.com

For Central Oklahoma Residents who already have a Sprinkler System, I recommend a RAIN/FREEZE SENSOR.  This is a great way to ensure that the sprinkler systemgets turned off when there is no one available to turn it off.  If you are away on vacation for example, the RAIN/FREEZE SENSOR will turn off the sprinkler system after a heavy thunderstorm when it is too wet to water.  The RAIN/FREEZE SENSOR will turn the sprinkler system back on when it is dry enough to water again.  It will do the same thing for your sprinkler systemit gets too cold or starts to snow.

Sprinkler System Installation in Oklahoma can be complicated.   There are many details that very important to ensure that a new Sprinkler System be durable and dependable for many years to come.  Attention to detail makes all the difference when installing a Sprinkler System.  Many times, So-Called, ” Fly By Night Sprinkler Companies,”  cut lots of corners to save money.  Low price should not be the determining factor for having a Sprinkler System installed.  A cheap Sprinkler System soon becomes very expensive if it has to be fixed all the time or won’t work at all.

Two things you should require on any Sprinkler System:

1.  Make shure PRIMER  is used along with PVC Glue when the Sprinkler Pipe is put together.  Primer helps the glue to bond to the PVC pipe.  This ensures that all the pressurized pipe connections won’t leak over time.  I have seen Sprinkler Systems that were no more than a year old that leaked everywhere.  Again some Sprinkler Contractors will cut corners with the Primer.

2.  Make shure the connection for the Sprinkler System at the water meter is done with a, “compression T.”  This ensures that no leaks will occur over time at this connection.  The Sprinkler Connection at the water meter is highly stressed every time the Sprinkler System is turned on.  A connection with Glue and Primer will not hold up to the stress over time.  This is why a Compression T must be used.  This is another area that some Sprinkler Contractors choose to cut corners.

The above two points are just a few of the details that need to be considered when installing a Lawn Sprinkler System.

For twenty years, CMG has been paying close attention to the important details necessary to ensuring the Installation of Sprinkler Systems that are dependable and will last.

My name is Blane Callen. I have owned and operated CMG Sprinklers and Drains since 1993.  I take great pride in my work.  The Letters “CMG” stand for the first letter of the first name of each of my children.  ( Chance, Melissa, Garrett )  = CMG

I have amassed a great deal of experience designing and installing Sprinkler SystemsRepairing Sprinkler Systems, and designing and installing Drainage SystemsIn the past 19 years, I have made mistakes, but I have learned from them.  As a result I get calls, from time to time,  from other Sprinkler and Drainage companies that have run into a problem that they can’t handle.  I am always glad to help.

I usually don’t take money up front for Sprinkler Installation, Sprinkler Repair, or Drain Installation.  I prefer that the customer pay me when the job is complete and they are happy with the work.  In a few cases on very large jobs I request a draw or outlay for parts.  The parts are delivered from my supplier to the address where the job is being done and equal the amount of the draw.  The parts stay on the premises until they are installed.

Please leave a comment at the bottom if you like.

CMG also designs and installs drainage systems.  If you have water standing in your yard after a thunder-storm or if your sidewalk turns into a moat after a hard rain you should consider a drainage system CMG has experience with many different types of drainage problems.  We utilize: French Drains, Surface Drains, Channel Drains, Basin Drains, Trench Drains, Basement Drains, and Sump Pumps.

Since 1993 we have gained a lot of experience addressing drainage problems Drainage problems can be complicated.  The solution is not always clear to the untrained eye.  CMG has repaired or overhauled many french drains and drainage systems that were installed by, “weekend warriors, a brother-in-law, or a landscaping company that also installs drains.”  They all can install Drainage Systems, Just not very well.  CMG has over 20 years of experience Diagnosing Drainage Problems.  This ensures that a Drainage System that we install won’t have Drain Pipes that are too small, or Surface Drains installed where French Drains Should be placed, or Exit Points that allow water to Stand and become stagnant.  The above examples are just three of many “Pit – Falls” that our experienced Drainage System Experts can easily avoid.

French Drains can be installed by themselves, or as part of a Drainage System that uses other French Drains, Surface Drains, or other Drain combinations.  Typically a French Drain is used to protect a broad area that has a lot of standing water.  A French Drain might run along side a homes foundation, or beside a driveway, or on any Drainage Project where Sub-Surface water is the primary problem.  If water is running toward your home under ground ( through sandy soil), A French Drain is the only Solution  for draining away water flowing under ground.

If you live in Oklahoma City and need a French Drain installed in your yard, or along your driveway, or near your foundation, give CMG a call.  If you live in Edmond or Norman and need a Surface Drain installed in the concrete in your sidewalk or driveway, we can help.  If you live in Mustang or Yukon and would like to protect your trees or flower beds from standing water with a French Drain, CMG specializes in just that!

Winter is coming to an end.  Heavy rain and snow seem to be more common for Central Oklahoma. Unfortunately the slopes and grades around our homes and businesses are not always designed to handle lots of heavy rain and snow. Standing Water and Storm Water-Runoff can cause damage to our homes and businesses.  Protecting your interests can be accomplished with aDrainage System. CMG Sprinklers and Drains has been solving Drainage Problems since 1993.  If you live inCentral Oklahoma an Estimate from CMG is free.  We can diagnose yourDrainage Problem and design a Drainage System that will fit your needs.

CMG Can Help With Standing Water

Many timesDrainage Problems are somewhat unique.  CertainDrainage Solutions can require more than one type of drain.  Some Drainage Systems require several types of Drains to solve a specific problem.  Other situations require just one type of Drain and are much more straight-forward. CMG Sprinklers and Drains utilizes: French Drains, Surface Drains, Channel Drains, Basin Drains, Trench Drains, Basement Drains, and Sump Pumps.  THIS ALLOWS US TO INSTALL THE BEST TYPE OF DRAIN TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.

Lawn Sprinkler Installation and Sprinkler Repair are a central focus along with Drainage Systems forCMG. If you are tired of dragging hoses around to make your yard look nice, you should consider a New Lawn Sprinkler System by CMGCMG installsIn-line Drains in the sprinkler pipes.  This means the water in the pipes will drain out automatically when theSprinkler System is turned off.  This ensures that the

the pipes wont freeze.

If you already own aSprinkler System or are considering Installing a Sprinkler System, you should consider a Rain/Freeze Sensor. It will turn off your Sprinkler System if it is raining or gets too cold and no-one is around to turn it off.  The Rain/Freeze Sensor will also turn it back on again when things dry out or warm up.

If you live in Yukon and need a French Drain, or if you live inNorman and want to Install a New Lawn Sprinkler System, or if you live in Blanchard and need aSprinkler Repair, Give CMG a call!

CMG Services Central Oklahoma including: Oklahoma City, Norman, Moore, Edmond, Midwest City, Del City, Blanchard, Purcell, Mustang, and Yukon.

My name is Blane Callen. I have owned and operated CMG Sprinklers and Drains since 1993.  I take great pride in my work.  The Letters “CMG” stand for the first letter of the first name of each of my children.  ( Chance, Melissa, Garrett )  = CMG

I have amassed a great deal of experience designing and installing sprinkler systems repairing sprinkler systems, and designing and installing drainage systems.  Like all things in life, I have made mistakes, but I have learned from them.  As a result I get calls from time to time from other sprinkler and drainage companies that have run into a problem that they can’t handle.  I am always glad to help.

I usually don’t take money up front for Sprinkler Installation, Sprinkler Repair, or French Drain Installation.
