Do you have water seeping into your floor vents after a hard rain?  Is water causing damage to your floors or carpet?  Is water finding a way under your foundation after a thunder storm?  CMG Sprinklers designs and installs Drainage Systems that can help stop the damage.  We utilize:  French Drains, Surface Drains, Channel Drains, and Sump Pumps to protect property.  Connecting gutter-downspouts into the Drainage System is always a good idea where possible.

The need for Drainage Systems is increasing in Oklahoma.  During heavy thunder storms,   homes and business need a way to drain water away Storm water can cause many kinds of damage.  Here are just a few:

1.  Driveways and Sidewalks can crack and deteriorate

2.  Foundations can crack move or shift

3.  Vents and ducts can fill with water

4.  Mold can be allowed to grow

5.  Trees and Plants and grass can be damaged or drown

Too much water is never a good thing!

CMG can quickly diagnose your Drainage Problem and provide a free quote for a Drainage System.  With twenty years of experience, we realize that Drainage Problems may be very complex and difficult or very straight forward and simple.  Every Drainage Problem is unique to a certain degree.  Don’t kid yourself,  Experience Counts!

CMG takes many things into account when providing a Drainage Diagnostic for a Customer.  We determine:

1.  What is the Primary Water Source to the problem?  Where is the water coming from?

2.  Is there a Secondary Water Source?  Other Places that water may be coming from.    All Drainage Problems have more than one source!

3.  How many Subsequent Water Sources are present?   Some complex Drainage Problems have many water sources.

4.  What exit points are available for gravity to move water away from the problem area?  Where are we trying to take the water to, and how is it

going to be released?  Is more than one exit point possible to increase capacity?

5   How much water must be moved?  What Size Drain Pipe is necessary to lessen the chance of being overwhelmed by flooding?    This is a tough

consideration.  (Larger Pipe – Larger Cost to Install)

These are just a few of the considerations for any Drainage System Diagnostic.

The Drainage System shown in the three above pictures consisted of the following:

Three Gutter Downspouts in the front yard were connected to 4 inch ADS solid Drain Pipe with Large Drainage Gutter Connections.  Three lateral 4 inch Pipes were run from each gutter to one outflow pipe moving the water to two exit Pop Up Emitters. One of the Drain Pipes ran under the sidewalk to reach the Exit Drain Pipe.

This Drainage System had two exit points.  One Pop-Up Emitter was on the edge of the driveway in the front yard.  The other Pop-Up Emitter was installed in the back yard near the property line.  Two exit points allows for a much larger Water Drainage Capacity.  (During Heavy Rains The Drainage System Can Move More Water Faster)

The back yard Exit Pipe then connected to 55 feet of 4 inch French Drain that was installed along the SW corner of the house.  The French Drain provided a protective barrier for that room of the house where water had previously been leaking into the floor vents.  Two Gutter Down Spouts were also connected in the back yard to the Drainage System.

A few days later a heavy rain came in.  No water stood on the sidewalk near the front door, and nor water seeped into the floor vents in the back bedroom.

CMG works closely with our customers.    We provide all the information we can to help the customer make a decision that will solve their Drainage Problem.

Typically,  Drainage Systems are made up of one or several types of Drains.  CMG utilizes French Drains, Surface Drains and Trench Drains when designing Drainage Systems.    There are many types and sizes of Surface Drains and French Drains.  Again, experience is the key!

If you have water standing on your driveway after a hard rain.  If your plants and trees are under water because your neighbor just added new gutters.   If your sidewalk is cracking  because half the time it is under water.  Give CMG a Call!  405-226-0629

In the past 20 years, CMG has designed and installed a large number of Drainage Systems.  For the most part, we have utilized French Drains and Surface Drains of many different shapes and sizes.  In two decades we have built up a high level of experience diagnosing Drainage Problems.  We know what to look for, what to expect, and how to approach a wide variety of situations where water is in a harmful or undesirable place.

CMG Sprinklers and Drains installs many types of Drains in a wide variety of places.  Here are a few of them. French Drain Installation along foundations near walls French Drain Installation behind retaining walls – French Drain Installation in and around flower beds – French Drain Installation in basements – French Drain Installation near sidewalks and along driveways – French Drain Installation under pool decks and around swimming pools – French Drain Installation on hillsides and on slopes to protect building and homes – Surface Drain Installation in sidewalks set in concrete – Surface Drain Installation in driveway set in concrete – Surface Drain Installation on side of house to catch water from gutter downspout Surface Drain Installation in basement with Sump Pump inside to pump out the water Surface Drain Installation in low spot in yard to handle a moderate amount of water – Surface Drain Installation next to driveway to catch water run-off – Surface Drain Installation next to sidewalk to catch water run-off – Surface Drain Installation connected to gutter down-spout – Just what is a “French Drain?”  Many times people incorrectly use the phrase, “French Drain,”  to apply to many different types of Drains  that could be used in a Drainage System.   The term is widely used and many times incorrectly connected to “Surface Drains,” or “Channel Drains.” A Surface Drain has a grate that sits on top of a basin.  The basin is underground.  A Drain Pipe is connected underground to an outlet on the Drain Basin. Storm-Water Drains through the grate into the Drain Basin.  Once in the Drain Basin, water travels out of the basin through a Drain Pipe.  The Storm-Water continues downhill in an underground Drain Pipe to an exit point. A Surface Drain may come in many different shapes or sizes.  It is a Drain Basin with a Drain Grate on top and a Drain Pipe connected on the side.  The Drain Grate may be round or square.

A Channel Drain is a type of Surface Drain and many times is installed in concrete across sidewalks or driveways.  It is long and narrow with a grate on top.

Channel Drain installed in a sidewalk by a front door.

Channel Drain installed in a sidewalk by a front door.

A French Drain is completely different from a Surface Drain.  A basic French Drain consists of a Perforated Drain Pipe in the bottom of a trench.  A  Trench Liner is sometimes used depending on the Drainage System Design and the type of soil.   The Drain Pipe should have a neoprene sock around the Perforated Drain Pipe.   This is to ensure that the Drain Pipe does not become clogged. A trench is dug that is slightly wider than the French Drain Pipe that is being used.  There are several sizes of French Drain Pipe.   Three Inch, Four Inch, and Six Inch are the most common sizes of French drain Pipe. The dirt that is taken out to make the trench is hauled away.  It is replaced by some type of small stone or gravel depending on what is desired or available.  I prefer crushed 1 inch lime stone.  It is the most economical option in my area.  Pea Gravel or some other type of small stone can work just as well.    The lime-stone or gravel is placed in the trench on top of the perforated Drain Pipe and filled all the way to the surface (ground level).   In some cases where the French Drain needs to be deep or is being placed in sandy soil, a special trench liner must be placed in the trench before the perforated Drain Pipe or the Gravel are installed.  This helps maintain the integrity of the trench over time.  It also increases the cost of the French Drain and the amount of time to install it.  I install a trench liner in a French Drain about 20% of the time.  Most of the time a liner in not needed.

A French Drain is designed to handle a large volume of water and cover a large area. The Drain is anyplace the trench goes. It has many applications and can be used in many situations.  It can be installed by itself or incorporated into a Drainage System with Surface Drains or Gutter Down-Spouts connected to it.
The main downfall of a French Drain is that they, for the most part aren’t very pretty.  They don’t look very nice in a yard once they are completed.
Depending on the area the French Drain is installed and the type of grass around the French Drain, will dictate whether grass grows over the lime stone.  Grass can grow up and through the gravel in the French Drain over time eventually covering the gravel.  This is OK.  It won’t have a measurable effect on the performance of the drain.
DONT COVER THE GRAVEL IN THE FRENCH DRAIN WITH DIRT.  THE FRENCH DRAIN WON’T WORK IF THE TRENCH IS CLOGGED WITH DIRT.  DON’T EVEN INSTALL IT IF YOU ARE GOING TO COVER IT UP WITH DIRT.
DECORATIVE STONE CAN BE USED TO COVER A FRENCH DRAIN AND THEY LOOK GREAT AND LAST A LIFETIME.

Drainage Systems can be made up of several types of Drains including French Drains, Surface Drains, or Channel Drains.  The following information focuses on Drainage System Exit Points CMG Sprinkler and Drains uses Curb Fittings or Pop-Up Emitters.

French Drains can be used in a variety of places and situations.  Typically a French Drain is intended to move a large volume of standing water away from the Problem Drainage Area to a predetermined exit point.  Once the standing water enters the French Drain, it flows downhill to the exit point.  The water is then released at the exit point by a Drainage Curb Fitting or a Drainage Pop-Up Emitter.

The Drainage Curb Fitting is installed when the desired exit point for the French Drain will release the Drainage Water into the Street.   The Drainage Curb Fitting is rectangular in shape and made to be installed through the curb.  A small section of Curb is cut out with a concrete saw.  The Section is a few inches wider than the Drainage Curb Fitting.  We then install new concrete around the curb fitting.  Once the concrete has dried, the Drain Pipe coming from a French Drain or Surface Drain is connected to the Drainage Curb fitting and then covered with dirt.

The Drainage Pop-Up Emitter is connected to the end of a Drain Pipe.  It is downhill from a French Drain or a Surface Drain.  It is a small release basin with a green pop-up lid.  When releasing water, it pops up about an inch to release the water from the French Drain or Surface Drain.  When the Storm Water has moved through the Drainage System and out of the Pop-Up Emitter, the green lid closes back to its original closed position.  The emitter is designed to release water out into a yard or down a hill or other desirable Drainage Exit Point where there is no curb.

Since 1993 we have gained a lot of experience addressing drainage problems Drainage problems can be complicated.  The solution is not always clear to the untrained eye.  CMG has redone or overhauled many drainage systems that were installed by, “weekend warriors, a brother-in-law, or a landscaping company that also installs drains.”  They all can install Drainage Systems, Just not very well.  CMG has over 20 years of experience Diagnosing Drainage Problems.  This ensures that a Drainage System that we install won’t have Drain Pipes that are too small, or Surface Drains installed where French Drains Should be placed, or Exit Points that allow water to Stand and become stagnant.  The above examples are just three of many “Pit – Falls” that our experienced Drainage System Experts can easily avoid.

CMG takes into account many things when performing a ,” Drainage Diagnostic.”

We consider how many sources are providing water to the problem.  Usually there are more than one.

We consider the type of soil on the property.  A French Drain in a sandy yard is installed differently than one in a yard with a clay base.

We consider how many exit points are available and will install at least two when possible.

CMG Sprinklers and Drains many times provides services to homeowners and Realtors who are trying to get a home ready to “Close”.  Structural Engineers sometimes require the Installation of  a French Drain, or a Surface Drain to solve a drainage problem.   Often an existing drainage system may need repair.  Other times we get a call to fix or repair a lawn sprinkler system or just give it a checkup.  We do our best to ensure that all deadlines are met.

CMG services all of Central Oklahoma.

If you are tired of spending endless hours dragging hoses around your yard, consider a new Lawn Sprinkler System designed and installed by CMG Sprinklers and Drains.  We stand behind our Sprinkler Systems and Drainage Systems.  Referrals from satisfied customers are the most important part of our business.

My name is Blane Callen. I have owned and operated CMG Sprinklers and Drains since 1993.  I take great pride in my work.  The Letters “CMG” stand for the first letter of the first name of each of my children.  ( Chance, Melissa, Garrett )  = CMG

I have amassed a great deal of experience designing and installing Sprinkler SystemsRepairing Sprinkler Systems, and designing and installing Drainage SystemsIn the past 18 years, I have made mistakes, but I have learned from them.  As a result I get calls, from time to time,  from other Sprinkler and Drainage companies that have run into a problem that they can’t handle.  I am always glad to help.

I usually don’t take money up front for Sprinkler Installation, Sprinkler Repair, or Drain Installation.  I prefer that the customer pay me when the job is complete and they are happy with the work.  In a few cases on very large jobs I request a draw or outlay for parts.  The parts are delivered from my supplier to the address where the job is being done and equal the amount of the draw.  The parts stay on the premises until they are installed.

Sprinkler Systems designed by CMG are SELF DRAINING.  When the Sprinkler System is not running, the Sprinkler Pipes drain underground.  This ensures that the Sprinkler Pipes will not freeze in the winter.   CMG Designed Sprinkler Systems are also fully automatic.  Your Sprinkler System can run on its own any time you want, day that you want, or as long as you want.  CMG can also install a Rain/Freeze Sensor that will turn off your Sprinkler System if it is too wet or too cold to water and you are not available to turn off the sprinkler system.  ( If your on Vacation for example)  The Rain/Freeze Sensorwill also turn the Sprinkler System back on again when it gets dry enough or warm enough to water again.  PRETTY COOL!

From time to time CMG Service Experts must work on a sprinkler system that we installed.  Usually it is for reasons beyond our control like, “lightning burning up a sprinkler controller” or,  “a customer running over a sprinkler head with their car.”

CMG designed sprinkler systems are fully automatic and self-draining.  When the sprinklers are not running, the system automatically drains the sprinkler pipesunder ground.  If it gets cold there is no water in the sprinkler pipes to freeze.

Sprinkler System Installation in Oklahoma can be complicated.   There are many details that very important to ensure that a new Sprinkler System be durable and dependable for many years to come.  Attention to detail makes all the difference when installing a Sprinkler System.  Many times, So-Called, ” Fly By Night Sprinkler Companies,”  cut lots of corners to save money.  Low price should not be the determining factor for having a Sprinkler System installed.  A cheap Sprinkler System soon becomes very expensive if it has to be fixed all the time or won’t work at all.

Two things you should require on any Sprinkler System:

1.  Make shure PRIMER  is used along with PVC Glue when the Sprinkler Pipe is put together.  Primer helps the glue to bond to the PVC pipe.  This ensures that all the pressurized pipe connections won’t leak over time.  I have seen Sprinkler Systems that were no more than a year old that leaked everywhere.  Again some Sprinkler Contractors will cut corners with the Primer.

2.  Make shure the connection for the Sprinkler System at the water meter is done with a, “compression T.”  This ensures that no leaks will occur over time at this connection.  The Sprinkler Connection at the water meter is highly stressed every time the Sprinkler System is turned on.  A connection with Glue and Primer will not hold up to the stress over time.  This is why a Compression T must be used.  This is another area that some Sprinkler Contractors choose to cut corners.

The above two points are just a few of the details that need to be considered when installing a Lawn Sprinkler System.

For twenty years, CMG has been paying close attention to the important details necessary to ensuring the Installation of Sprinkler Systems that are dependable and will last.

CMG Sprinklers and Drains designs and installs Drainage SystemsWater Drainage is a big concern to home owners and small businesses. Standing Water from Storm-Water runoff can cause all kinds of problems.  Concrete in driveways, sidewalks, and foundations can be damaged.  Prolonged Drainage Problems allow mold to occur along with deterioration to plants, trees, and property.

Just what is a “French Drain?”  Many times people incorrectly use the phrase, “French Drain,”  to apply to many different types of Drains that could be used in a Drainage System.  The term is widely used and many times incorrectly connected to “Surface Drains,” or “Channel Drains.”

A Surface Drain has a grate that sits on top of a basin.

THIS IS NOT A FRENCH DRAIN!

A Surface Drain may come in many different shapes or sizes.  The Drain Grate may be round or square.  Here is a picture of a common Surface Drain.

A Channel Drain is a type of Surface Drain and many times is installed in concrete across sidewalks or driveways.

French Drain is completely different from a Surface Drain.  A basic French Drain consists of a Perforated Drain Pipin the bottom of a trench.  The Drain Pipe should have a neoprene sock around the Perforated Drain Pipe.   This is to ensure that the Drain Pipe does not become clogged.

The dirt that was taken out to make the trench is hauled away.

French Drain March 2011
French Drain is designed to handle a large volume of water and cover a large area.
